Raised in Tribute:
$1789.50My Grandma LaVeda (Struss) was born in Hastings, Nebraska on July 18th 1928 and is turning 90 this year. When she was 10 months old her Mom got Mumps. Grandma got erysipelas and meningitis and had a temp of over 105 for 6 days; luckily she has always been a fighter. She got married to Robert Schroeder on December 27th, 1947. They moved to Kearney bought a little house and had 5 kids (3 boys and 2 girls).
My Grandma said "My mother was my mentor. If I could be half as good as she was I'd feel as though I was successful." This rings true in my heart. My Grandma played a huge part in raising me. I have fond memories of her taking me to the swimming pool. She would always say I was a little fish which encouraged my love of swimming. Also, she sold Avon and had her billiards table full of make-up where I would spend hours playing with all her samples. After my Grandpa died of cancer she volunteered for over 30 years at the Good Samaritan Hospital & the American Cancer Society. She fitted wigs for cancer patients; which meant that her house was full of wigs for me to always play with and coupled with my Aunt Norma's ballet costumes I was in dress-up heaven. Also, as the only Granddaughter I made my little boy cousins play dress-up with me.
She was diagnosed with Parkinson when she was 60. Parkinson is a genetic disorder and they are doing research to find out the exact cause.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today. The Foundation is the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research, with more than $800 million in high-impact research funded to date.
