Josephine 'Jo' Bergin Gilhooley was born on January 17, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY to Martin and Mary Bergin. She graduated from Manhattanville College with a degree in Art History and English and began a career in advertising. Soon after, she married a World War II decorated Navy Lieutenant Commander John J. Gilhooley, to whom she was married for 31 years.

In Jo's later years, she moved to Vero Beach, FL where she enjoyed spending time with her sisters and friends. She and her sisters enjoyed traveling together. In her quieter moments, Jo liked to chronicle her unique perspective on everyday life in her writings, drawings, and watercolors. Over the past 10 years, she participated in numerous watercolor workshops and exhibited in the local Vero Beach area.

In recent years, Parkinson's slowed Josephine considerably, and she lost the battle to Parkinson's on New Year's Day 2018. Jo will always be remembered as a devoted wife and mother of six who supported her family and her husband's career. Her surviving three sons, their spouses, her five granddaughters, and her large extended family miss Jo's kind, gentle, and lovely spirit.
