Born in El Salvador, Domitila Perez was my strong and independent grandmother. She was a single mother of three who worked hard to give her children a better life. She was sweet, fun-loving, and kind--not to mention an amazing cook!

On weekends,"Mama Tila", as her grandchildren called her, loved to travel to the beach with the entire family. If it was her choice, she would be surrounded by her 12 grandchildren all the time! She spoiled us and was always there to guide us. I can still remember those early mornings before heading to school when she would curl my hair as we sat in the patio of the house.

In her younger years, Mama Tila traveled throughout Mexico and Central America. In fact, our family's annual pilgrimage to Esquipulas, Guatemala was her most cherished trip of all. Many years later, when I emigrated to the United States without her, l discovered that among the musical songs she liked was La Bikina, a popular Mexican song. Nowadays, when I listen to this song, I think of her and wish she was still here with us.

She is remembered and adored by her remaining son (who is my dad), her daughter, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I am so happy to have spent the first seven and a half years of my life living with her in El Salvador. I know that she did so much for me as a child and for the rest of her family. Hence, my family and I would like to cherish and honor her memory and make sure her fighting spirit lives forever.
