Raised in Tribute:
$103.00Raymond Eugene (Gene) Cain, aged 87, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 4, 2025 after a period of declining health. Gene was born at Grady Hospital on March 13, 1938 and raised by his paternal grandparents, Mack A. and Ganell Cain. After moving from Atlanta to Decatur, he attended Rehoboth Elementary and Clarkston High School.
At the age of 17, he joined the US Army and was stationed in Korea and Germany. In 1958, he married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Christine (Chris) Wilson. They spent the early years of their marriage at several bases around the country before moving back to Decatur.
Discharged in 1962, Gene worked in several fields before finding his place as a uniformed officer with the Atlanta Police Department. Several years later, he joined the Dekalb County Police Department. His career with Dekalb Police consisted of uniformed duties, auto theft, narcotics, special investigative unit, and intelligence unit until his retirement in 1995.
In retirement, Gene enjoyed spending time in Hiawassee, Ga where he and Chris had a second home. He also looked forward to spending time with family, which included four grandchildren. In 2009, Gene and Chris enjoyed a long-planned trip to Ireland to research his ancestral heritage. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before Chris’ passing in 2020.
He was a Master Mason (Fort Benning Lodge), enjoyed collecting Civil War memorabilia, and watching NASCAR and old westerns on TV. We will miss his humor, his stories, and being able to ask him anything about World War II.
In addition to his paternal grandparents and wife, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Sheila Ann Cain, and a brother, Ronnie Cain. He is survived by his daughter Terri Cain Boggs and husband Tim of Decatur; son Stephen E. Cain and wife Jodi of Covington; grandchildren: Jessica Cain, Nikolas Cain, Cara Boggs, Liam Boggs (Macey); and cherished half-siblings along with nieces and nephews including Ken Cain and Jennifer McKenna.
