Raised in Tribute:
$351.04It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of I. Marshall Schames, 88, on May 30, 2025 in White Plains, NY. Born on March 8, 1937 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Marshall was a devoted husband to Sandy (née Birch), who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving family, son Brian, daughter in law Cynthia, and grandchildren Sutton and Aiden of Chappaqua, NY.
Marshall was hard-working and dedicated. As a young man, he was part of the Army Reserves, and he also completed a degree in accounting from City College of New York. He spent his entire professional life as the third generation of Schames men to own and operate the iconic Schames Paint Supply on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
Despite his many responsibilities as a business owner, he always made time for his family and friends. Though Marshall may not have liked being the center of attention, he deserves to have his long years of fatherly love and friendship honored. He was a man of intelligence, loyalty, generosity and kindness, and he left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Marshall enjoyed simple joys, including building rockets with a young Brian, playing craps and poker, meeting up with his “breakfast club” every week, growing way too many tomatoes in his Great Neck backyard, grilling steaks, and taking cruises or going on other vacations with Sandy. He enjoyed movies, especially the excellent naps in the second half of most. He also enjoyed telling jokes, many of which he found so hilarious that he rarely delivered the punch lines intact. He loved dogs, and always missed his chocolate lab Coco after she passed. He was immensely proud of the accomplishments of his only son Brian. But his greatest pride and joy in life was his grandchildren Aiden and Sutton. He beamed and bragged at every opportunity, and they loved him right back.
In addition to his close family, he is survived by many friends and extended family members throughout Long Island, New York City, and Westchester County, who will miss him dearly.
We find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever.
