$819.97In 1993 at the age of 40, José Luis Altuve Manrique, was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s.
True to his indominable spirit and work ethic, in the early years of his illness José Luis remained active both with his family and with his wide group of friends. He also continued as network manager in the Alumni Relations office of McGill University in Montreal. However, after a few years, he developed an intolerance for most of the newer medications that have proven so effective for many Parkinson’s sufferers. With the unpredictability of his on/off periods, he was forced to withdraw from the workplace.
In spite of his difficult physical reality, José Luis cherished his role as stay-at-home Dad. Over the years, José Luis participated in family events and traveled extensively. His amazing willpower kept him going. While he declined physically and mentally, his positivity and kindness never faded.
The disease, however, finally caught up with José Luis. The medication was no longer effective and his pain, even with the strongest drugs, could no longer be controlled. José Luis chose to take back control by opting for medical assistance in dying. He passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12th, 2024, with his family by his side.
