Dan was diagnosed with Parkinsons when he was just 37 years. In fact, he got the news from his doc the day that Michael J Fox went public with *his* diagnosis. That somebody as high profile as MJF had the same disease gave Dan some comfort -- he knew it would mean increased recognition of, and support for, the need for a cure. Dan navigated the ups and downs of Parkinsons for 23 years. He left his job as a lawyer and for many years focused on Parkinsons advocacy work. He stayed active -- exercise was a passion, even after he had to give up running. He turned to Peloton rides and boxing (and even wrote a piece about the Rock Steady boxing program for The Washington Post), strength training, and daily walks. He devoted himself to his kids and was a calm and patient stay-at-home parent. Thankfully, because Deborah, his spouse (and author of this), not so much on the patience front! Parkinsons threw just about everything at him -- depression, freezing and falling, challenges with speech and fine motor skills. But he never gave into the disease. Late last year he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive lymphoma, and even then Dan was optimistic that he would be able to beat the disease and go back to "only" having Parkinsons. He readied for battle and began treatment in January of 2023. But fate was not kind to him and after only one round of chemotherapy, his system was weakened to a point that he was unable to recover. Dan never ever felt sorry for himself. He will be missed always.
