Joe was born on December 28, 1941 to Dutch and Jeanette Bowen in Sidney, Ohio. He was raised on the family farm in Wooster, Ohio. He graduated from Cornell University where he was captain of the light-weight football team and president of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.

Joe had a distinguished career in the grain business that lead him to MN where he lived for 40+ years. He worked at International Multifoods, Bunge Corp and served as president of the Minneapolis Grain Shippers Association.
Joe's greatest joy was his family including his four grandchildren. He raised polled purebred shorthorn cattle, played rugby and tennis, coached countless teams and cheered on his children. He loved to travel, visit his extended family and play bridge. He was an active member at Messiah Church and a member of the MN Shorthorn Association.
Joe was predeceased in death by his parents, Dutch and Jeanette Bowen. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bowen, son Derek (Christina) Bowen, daughter Jennifer (Anthony) Edmonds; grandchildren Megan, Dani, Maggie and Finn and siblings Peter Bowen, Jane Edwards and Susan Shultz.
