My father, Paul H. Hunziker, fought an intense 8-year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was diagnosed in 2014, shortly after receiving the good news that he was winning his fight against the blood & bone marrow cancer, Multiple Myeloma. Receiving a new devastating diagnosis, just as he thought he was on the verge of regaining good health, was a crushing blow, but my Dad still tried to turn his focus to optimistic ideas. He found comfort in keeping up with the latest research and promising discoveries in the pursuit of a cure for Parkinson's, and he gathered this hopeful information on the Michael J. Fox Foundation's website.
My Dad was a Vietnam veteran. He spent one year in basic training and one year in-country, but he continued to approach life with the spirit and drive of a soldier for all the rest of his years. This drive and spirit was most evident in his fight against his Parkinson's. He truly fought, with all his might, up to the very last second. He even fought his illness in the literal sense by participating in a "Rock Steady" boxing program, designed specifically for Parkinson's patients. Unfortunately, though, my Dad lost his hard-fought battle on March 23, 2022. Parkinson's dementia had taken away his ability to swallow properly, which then took away his ability to eat and drink, and also allowed fluids to enter his lungs. He quickly developed aspiration pneumonia & his body was not able to recover.
One of the last things my Dad said before he passed was that he wanted to get better. Though this wish didn't come true for him, I know he would love nothing more than to see it come true for others suffering with this cruel disease. Therefore, donations made in my Dad's memory, that will help fund research for a cure, would mean more to him than words could describe.
Our family sends countless heartfelt "thank you"s to anyone who makes a donation of any size.
~With love and gratitude,
The Hunziker Family
