Raised in Tribute:
$4758.40On April 12th, I lost one of the most important people in my life, my grandfather. Pop Pop was one of the most influential people in my life. He inspired me to be kind, to work hard, to love, and most importantly to persevere. My grandfather exemplified what it meant to be more than your circumstances. He worked hard, with my grandmother, to provide a better life for his family. His life and his trajectory were inspiring.
As the oldest of his grandchildren, I am very fortunate to have many fond memories of my grandfather; days and nights on the boardwalks, his over-taped Christmas presents, dance recitals with him always cheering in the audience. But what sticks out most to me is that he never wanted to smile in pictures! He was one of the happiest people I have ever met, but you would never get that from his pictures. He was always there to support me, even when it became challenging for him. I will never forget how much it meant to me that he was able to attend my college graduation. Because of him, I knew the unconditional love of a grandparent.
Unfortunately, my grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s almost twenty years. However, Pop Pop was so much more than his disease. Never did he let his diagnosis define him nor did he ever feel sorry for himself. He always focused on the good and how blessed a life he had.
Now what was one of the most difficult battles for my family, it stimulated my interest in science. And despite how challenging those times were, I will forever be grateful that my grandfather inspired my passion for science and healthcare. And although my grandfather succumbed to PD, I know there are so many amazing scientist and doctors in the world working on more effective treatments and cures for PD and other neurological diseases. For this, I thank all those who are working to help those who are suffering. And with this knowledge, I pledge a donation to the Michael J. Fox foundation in Pop Pop’s honor.
Pop Pop, I love you and I am grateful for the time I had with you and the many special memories.
