Patricia Slattery was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2010 as she was planning her upcoming retirement. In 2011, she and her husband Jim purchased their retirement home in Estero, Florida. Around that time, they were blessed with their first grandchild, Dominic. A few years later, their second grandchild, Danny, was born. Pat could not be more excited to watch the two of them grow up. Pat and Jim spent their winters in Estero and their summers in Chicago until late 2014, when they made Florida their permanent home.

Pat's disease progressed quickly, and by 2015, she relocated to Life Care Center of Estero. She remained as sharp-witted as ever, even as Parkinson's took over her body. As her movement became limited, her iPad became her form of entertainment and communication. On it she never lost her desire to shop, and her new favorite store was Amazon. In April 2016 she spent three weeks in the hospital. She fought her way back, but reached a point where she required a feeding tube and could no longer eat. Despite that, she was determined to enjoy food, and during her waking hours was the number one fan of Food Network. Even with her eventual inability to communicate and the grim reality of her situation, her occasional burst of laughter was contagious to those that came to visit. She eventually lost all mobility.

Patricia died on Thursday July 13, 2017. She is survived by her husband James Slattery, her two children Sean Slattery and Shannon (Jon) Mussa, her grandchildren Dominic and Danny, and her brother Bill (Joanne). Although she ultimately lost her battle, her family is hopeful that a cure will be found, and that others will escape this truly debilitating disease.
