My stepdad, Jim "Papa" Stalla, entered our family when I was 10 years old. My other 6 siblings ranged from 5 to 20 years old. The 6 still at home were 5 girls from 6 to 15, with the youngest a boy of only 5. Jim never had any children, but overnight became a father to such a big brood. It wasn't always easy, but as the years grew, he became the beloved dad to us, and beloved "papa" to more than 35 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was kind, patient, smart, and easy going, with a great sense of humor. He was so proud of us all, and we were proud to be his family. What kind of man would step in to help raise so many children? Papa was that kind of man.
After surviving colon cancer and lung cancer, Jim was given a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease a few years ago. This horrible disease took quite the toll on his once strong body, making it difficult to walk , eat, or even get out of a chair. He never complained and tried to refuse our offers of help. He was trying so hard to take care of his wife, our mom, through her broken hip, broken back, and other difficulties. His priority was to take care of our mom, his wife of 47 years. She, and all of us, will miss him dearly.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today. The Foundation is the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research, with more than $2 billion in high-impact research funded to date.
