John was a kind, smart, gentle, hard working man. He served in the Army during World War II. He told stories of being hungry and cold! He told my sons, that were fascinated with GI Joe and all things army, war is NOT fun.
He infused his work ethic and "can do" attitude into each of us, his ten children. His huge garden helped to feed us in lean times. He worked to can the garden's surplus for winter after completing an eight hour day walking his mail route. He worked two jobs all of my life. When I was young, he worked painting the inside and outside of homes. Later he managed a credit union, balancing everything by hand, no computers then!!
Dad had enormous patience with all of us. As adults, he helped each of us settle into homes of our own, teaching us how to paint, glaze windows, and make needed repairs. One summer, he moved my brother and I on consecutive weekends.
He generally never complained, only if we were disorganized or unprepared. He never wanted to waste time!
I miss his wisdom, unfailingly good advice, and his homegrown popcorn!
