Raised in Tribute:
$695.25Russ Kirkland came from an incredibly musical family, and had been a gifted artist, writer, and musician his entire life. He had written and produced record albums for his own band, September, as well as produced and recorded other local bands and artists. In the '80's he also traveled for a time with the late artist Dan Peek, of the band America. And as a part of his artistic expression, he collaborated with his sister on a musical.
In 1994 Russ became aware of some physical symptoms which were impeding his ability to play the piano and guitar. After nearly a year of seeking answers- a neurologist finally diagnosed him with Parkinson's disease at the young age of 38. Russ continued to work as a musician but by this time he was also involved with a young start-up church called Windsor Crossing Community Church. Russ was integral to developing their music ministry and later became one of the associate pastors there. As time and the disease marched on- Russ felt the need to retire. He continued to support and attend church until symptoms became unmanageable. Russ moved into The Abbey, a nearby Nursing Home where he was cared for by his loving family and Abbey staff until his passing May 11, 2024.
