Raised in Tribute:
$6706.00Beloved father, engineer, athlete, coach and model airplane enthusiast, Walter P. Stroud, Jr. passed away on August 12, 2016 at his home in Rockville, MD with family members by his side.
As a career engineer, Walt designed submarine hulls for the Navy for 32 years. Along with his wife Barbara, Walt raised three sons, enriching them with summer math sessions, road trips to athletic tournaments throughout the year and weekend visits to the Air & Space museum.
Walt was also a high-level athlete playing college lacrosse at the University of Delaware, football and track at Archmere Academy and competing in dozens of road races including the Marine Corps. Marathon in 1985.
Walter served as head coach for soccer, lacrosse and tennis teams throughout his adult life. He coached all three of his sons, John, Jeff, and Andy throughout different stages of their lives and attended nearly every game in which he would record most of them for analysis afterwards. This was often feared but treasured as well. As the oldest of 5 siblings, Walter also was often a coach and mentor for his sisters Mary Anne, Char and Terry and his brother Jimmy in Springfield, PA where they grew up.
Upon retiring, Walt had planned to cycle across the country and return to his boyhood hobby of building and flying model airplanes. A diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease in 2003 prevented him from embarking on the cross country bike expedition with the disease greatly affecting his balance and strength. Through sheer determination he continued biking shorter distances for another decade. Although Parkinson's prevented him from assembling the intricate pieces of his model airplanes, Walt continued to fly remote controlled aircraft with his sons and grandchildren until his final days.
A keen yet dry sense of humor always had folks around Walt laughing and his three boys would often find themselves laughing in tears together with Walt over some absurd thought or concept. His love for his family was immense. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
A celebration of Walter's life was held on Saturday, August 27th at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville.
Sincerely, the Stroud family
