Mel grew up without the benefit of having a dad around. I think that that made him an extra special dad to us. This may also explain why he was unfailingly patient and kind to friend and stranger alike. Anyone who knew Mel knew that he loved to laugh, make others laugh, and spread goodwill.

Mel Plotzker was universally loved by his family, his friends, his kids' friends, his co-workers, and every waiter at every deli in the Garment District. We frequently heard him referred to as the unofficial "Mayor of Seventh Avenue." "Oh, you're Mel's son" we'd hear; it was like being royalty.

Mel also had a sense of humor - not a good sense of humor, mind you - but a generous one, and he loved to share a joke. The phrase that filled us with dread was "I've got a good one for ya'..." He'd then launch into some groaner (often smirked at, but later repeated with glee).

Mel Plotzker loved life, loved his family and made friends with everyone he met. He was a sweet man who loved to make you smile and enjoyed the simple things in life. He instilled in us the importance of being kind to others, and thinking about how our actions affected those around us. And, perhaps most importantly - no matter what, we always knew he loved us. That's a powerful thing for a child to know.
