Born in Philadelphia, he was the son to the late Henry and Dorothy, brother Harry and sister Dorothy. Ed was a long time employee of Jack Frost Sugar Company and National Gypsum Company. In his retirement, Ed's love of golf turned into a part time job at Springfield Golf Center, NJ. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather ("Pop") and great-grandfather dedicated to providing for his family. Ed is survived by his 5 children: Debbie, Ed (Sue), Rich (Celeste), Dave (Jacqui) and Jim (Christine). Ed ("Pop") is also survived by his 9 beloved grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild: Melissa, Dan (Gretchen), Justin, Kyle, Kelsey, Nick, Amanda, Patrick, Hope and Hannah.
Ed bravely fought Parkinson's disease with his competitive nature garnered from his athletic abilities. He was a natural athlete who demonstrated courage, never give up attitude, compassion and faith even as the disease took away his independence. In his advanced stages of the disease, Ed took up boxing to try and improve his quality of life. His love of athletics was always prevalent. Ed even met the love of his life Irene at the bowling alley. In his early years, Ed excelled at baseball and football. As he got older, he turned his competitive spirit into his new hobbies; playing golf, bowling, darts and horse shoes. As his children grew older, Ed became a dedicated coach and board member of the Lansing Knights Youth Organization. He also was a board member for years at Torresdale Swim Club, where he enjoyed long nights of playing cards and took care of the grounds especially the horse shoe pits. His natural athletic ability allowed him to win numerous tournaments and even earned him the nickname "Horseshoe Eddie". Ed was also a member of the Far Northeast Seniors Center in Philadelphia.
Ed always loved to have a good time. He had so much fun dancing at weddings. Family weddings always included the "Twist" with his daughter, Debbie, the jitterbug and him leading the conga lines with a big smile on his face! Dad also loved his sweets. His favorites were pineapple upside down cake, ice-cream and apple pie and anything chocolate. His love of sweets and chocolate was a main stay of his diet until the end.
Any donation in Ed's name to the Michael J Fox Foundation is appreciated in trying to cure this disease.
Sincerely,
The Mariner Family
