Suraiya (Pathan) Lutchmedial “Baby”, as she was known to her extended family, was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. She was known for her big heart and gave love and empathy to everyone. She knew no limits to giving to children and families in need. In 1965 Suraiya headed to New York to represent East Pakistan at the World’s Fair, from there she travelled to Kingston, and then Montreal to work at Sir George Williams University. It was there where she met her beloved husband Sydney and soon their young family settled in Chateauguay, QC. With her MA in English Literature and her BA in Education, Suraiya taught elementary and high school for over 25 years. Her passion for the arts led her to create cherished school concerts, dance, and theatre. She also was an enthusiastic sports fan - cheering on sporting events of all kinds, and especially her favourite teams (Canadiens!!) and competitors (Jordan!). Suraiya was diagnosed with Parkinson's in her early thirties and passed away after a long and courageous struggle with the disease in April 2019. She is survived by her husband Sydney; her siblings Lily (Idris) Talukdar, Dolly (Lemmy) Chandu, Sabu (Donna) Pathan; her two sons Sohrab (Deanna) and Faisal (Tamara); her grandchildren Zachary, Jonah and Miriam; along with many nieces and nephews.
