Marie Nudo was a significant part of the lives of her family and friends, always willing to help in any way she could. She was a loyal daughter to her parents; her father James Minardi having immigrated to the U.S. from Calabria and subsequently marrying Alice Sicilia; and Marie loved, and looked up to, her older sister Frances. She was a dedicated wife to "Jimmy" Nudo, and she was the mother of daughter Alice. She was a significant presence at frequent family gatherings, helping at great lengths during the many special occasions and holidays when Italian feasts were part of the celebrations. She was the major caretaker of both her parents and her husband during the trying times of their illnesses and deaths.
As Marie's niece, my memories of her are mostly of my childhood years. "Aunt Marie" was always there for me and my mother's family. My mother didn't drive, so if either I or my sister became ill at school, Aunt Marie would appear at the school office to take us home. During inclement weather, Aunt Marie would wait at the school yard at dismissal time so that we didn't have to walk home in the rain or snow. When I was a teenager, if I was angry with my parents (what teenager doesn't get angry with parents?!), I would talk to Aunt Marie and she would listen patiently. She was like a "rock," strong and reliable, and she helped this young teenager to develop a sense of self-worth.
In her later infirm years, I would send letters and pictures of my family to Aunt Marie, which I believe she enjoyed receiving. She remained a significant part of the lives of her family and friends in spite of her infirmity. She will be dearly missed, and I know that many lives have been made better because they were touched by my aunt, Marie Nudo.
