$817.30Jack Powers was a beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather. Although he was born in Paducah, Kentucky his family moved to Tennessee when Jack was just a boy and thus began his love for the Vols. Growing up in Oak Ridge he graduated from Oak Ridge High School and then went to the University of Tennessee, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He married Barbara Jeanne Murray on September 20, 1963 and together they had 3 children, Richmond, Melanie and Leigh Anne. Jack worked for Burlington Industries in North Carolina for five years before moving to Lexington, Kentucky to start a career at IBM, later LexMark, as a Systems Analyst until he retired.
Dad lived a quiet life, devoted to working hard and providing for his family. He was quick witted and enjoyed laughing and making others laugh. He loved books and had a wide varied collection from war books to books on Marilyn Monroe. He had a love for history and learning. His greatest love, aside from his family, was Tennessee Football! A season ticket holder for almost 50 years he promised his wife that if he got those tickets he would start taking his kids to the games when they turned 6. And so he did. Many a weekend trip was taken to Oak Ridge to see his mother and siblings, and then to take that old two lane road into Knoxville, the same road he traveled to college. All the way talking about his college days and the upcoming game. We also talked about life and anything else that struck us. Once on campus he would show us all of the places he would go when he was there and we would always take the bridge over Cumberland Avenue and look below. We would end with a trip to the student center and Vol shop before heading to Neyland for another exciting game. That tradition and love was important to dad. He didn't tell us that, he showed it to us, and let it fill us deep in our souls. Those trips have special meaning to each of his kids.
The love we have for this man will live forever. We will never forget you and all of the wonderful things you taught us and the love you gave. Rest in peace dad, and enjoy being 39 forever.
Being diagnosed with Parkinson's was hard for dad. He feared how it would affect him physically and mentally, and once he was told he shouldn't drive anymore he was crushed. He struggled with that and many other aspects of the disease until he passed, and we struggled watching him go through it. I pray more research proves to find hope and help for those diagnosed in the future, and ultimately a cure. If you would like to donate in honor of our dad or another loved one please do.
With love from the Powers family.
