My dad, Herbert Goldstein was born in Brooklyn on December 22, 1929. He had a regular life, growing up in Brooklyn which was mostly Jewish. Going to school, the beach living with his parents. Miriam and Morris Goldstein. Miriam worked at the temple and Morris was a taxi cab driver.
He went into the service, the army, the Koren war. He was sent to Iceland. It was very cold, but he made it . Before he left he meet my mom, Claire Feitelson. When he got back they were married. He got a job upstate New York as a sports writer. They were up there for a few years. Then he got a job as a writer for The Racing Form, which changed his and our life.
He worked for the form for 30 years. He worked in NY, KY, CA, MD , IL and Canada at the best Race tracks. He wrote about all the big races, all the owners, trainers and Jockeys. He wrote about the celebrity crowd that came to the track.
While working he was helping my mom with 2 kids, Carol and Amy.
Then a big change happened, he met Bernie Chaus and started a Racing stable. Everything was going great, racing and breeding horses.
Then he was told he had to have open heart surgery, he went to have a the surgery and came out ok, but he was never the same. Then a few years later, he was told he had Parkinson's Disease. The hand shaking, not being able to stand up straight and as the years went on it got worse. Everything he loved was taken away from him. First the cane, then the walker, then the wheelchair, then not being able to eat because he could not swollow. When he passes way, June 7, 2013, he was at peace and hopefully, playing golf and watching the races up in heaven.
