My dad died on February 17, 2020, at the age of 63. He was a kind and gentle man, but our relationship was complicated. We were estranged for the last four and a half years of his life.
I loved my dad, and I have set up a monthly donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation as a way to honor his life and continue my relationship with him.
Some of my favorite memories of my dad are:
- Riding roller coasters with him at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City
- Yearly ski trips in Colorado, for which my dad would drive ten hours through the night so that we could hit the slopes first thing in the morning
- Hiking at Sleeping Giant in Connecticut when I was in college
- His impression of Nicholas Cage in "Moonstruck" ("I lost my hand! I lost my bride!")
- The way he used to sing, "Nacho, nacho man" on "nacho nights" when I was a kid
- Riding the MS150 together on a tandem bicycle
- Seeing "The Lion King" three times in theaters, and having to sneak in one of those times
- His "receding hair linings"
- The silly Santa hat he would wear every year on Christmas Eve
- The week we spent driving around New England to visit colleges, and how invested he was in making sure I got the best education possible
- How he would help me move my stuff at the end of every school year in college, even though it became increasingly difficult
- Carving pumpkins together on Halloween
- Taking our dog, Fritz, on walks
I love you, Daddio, and I think about you every day.
