Dr. Joseph Edward Geusic lost his 14 year battle with Parkinson's on December 13, 2014. He was 83 years old. He was a physicist at Bell Laboratories for 37 years and a MARI Fellow at Micron for ten years after his retirement. He loved science and research. He developed the laser which is widely used in many minimally invasive surgical procedures today. He held over 200 patents under his name. He published many articles and papers, and received numerous prestigious awards for his accomplishments in science. He was an IEEE fellow and included in Who's Who in America. He was a golfer, skier, avid reader, tennis player and music lover. His curiosity and love of lifelong learning took him all over the world. He was married for over 60 years and had six children and five grandchildren. His mantra was "Do your best, even if people think it is not the best at the time." What he was trying to say was that sometimes doing the right thing and doing it well is not perceived as such by many at first. This happened many a time with some of his best ideas and inventions. Their value was not immediately perceived by others. He tried his best to manage his Parkinson's with dignity. And we all applaud him for it as well as his many other accomplishments in a life well lived. The date he died 12/13/14 will not be seen again for 89 years. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same of him. Nevertheless, Just as the date of the day he died on is unique so was he. He is remembered, loved and missed on a daily basis nevertheless.
