Bill was diagnosed in April, 2009. I was out of the country when he phoned and told me. Even though we had suspected his tremors might indicate Parkinson's it still came as a shock. He was 66 and had been retired for two years.
The first few years saw little change and life continued as usual. We decided to sell our house in Pennsylvania and move to Rancho Mirage in California to be nearer our son and golf courses, he loved to play golf. That was in 2011. Fast forward four years, no golf, caregivers all day, hospital visits due to frequent falls, choking and speech difficulties. Life is not easy for either of us but I am determined to keep him here in our home where he is happy. He seldom complains about his disease but life is a struggle and doctors don't have much more to offer right now. We have four friends who have been diagnosed recently making it seem like an epidemic out here. I pray that a cure is found soon or at least a new drug will come online to better manage the symptoms.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today.
