Our Dad, Ramon "Monching" Hizon was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 1997. Our Mom, Luisa Perla Hizon, was his primary caregiver. My two brothers and I experienced Parkinson’s by his side.
For nearly 23 years, Dad lived with and managed the impact of Parkinson's with a smile on his face and a song in his heart. He always had a corny joke to tell and sang his favorite songs, with or without karaoke. Mom was his constant companion. She laughed the hardest at his jokes and encouraged him to sing. They were our superheroes, the Dynamic Duo of love and hospitality. Their hearts and homes were always open. They traveled the world, entertained family and friends in their homes in Wichita and Las Vegas, and really lived the good life.
On February 28, 2020, our Dad passed away. Less than two months later, on April 25, 2020, our Mom passed away. She passed away one day after their wedding anniversary. They would have been married 56 years. Our parents gave us everything they had: their time, attention, and love. Not only were they the best parents, but they were also the best doctors. Dad was a radiologist and Mom was a pediatrician. While there is no cure for Parkinson's yet, we hope and pray that we will find a cure. We know that Dad and Mom are doing their part in Heaven by looking out for those who suffer from Parkinson's, comforting the caregivers, and cheering on the researchers.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today. The Foundation is the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research, with more than $800 million in high-impact research funded to date.
