Vernon E. Lee, my dad, bravely suffered from Parkinsons Disease for about 20 years. The first sign of the disease was a small tremor in his little finger. He went through many tests and was first diagnosed with Parkinsonian-like tremors, which eventually was found to be full blown Parkinsons. The tremors progressed slowly until both arms and hands were involved.
He was a brilliant businessman and managed to continue running the business until age 70. He lived until age 86 and, fortunately was still able to walk short distances with the help of a cane. Cause of death was Cardiac Arrest. He was a WWII vet and definitely my hero. I read everything I could find about the disease and found Michael J Fox to be the best resource. The doctors tried many different combinations of medications but none were very effective in his case. We were very grateful he did not develop it until he was in his 60's and that he was still somewhat mobile when we lost him. He did develop Sundowners and some dimensia in his final years. The day a cure is developed will be a great one indeed.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson's today. The Foundation is the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research, with more than $800 million in high-impact research funded to date.
