My father began his war with Parkinson's late in life, being diagnosed at age 70. He fought hard, suffered from the side effects of medications and PD related dementia. He was a fighter formed by a rough childhood, coming of age during the Great Depression, finding a life line through the Civil Conservation Corp of the New Deal era. He was an active man; hunting, fishing, farming and raising a family of 4 children in the Southern Tier of NY State. I have fond memories of fishing trips, shooting target practicing and even milking cows and other chores with him as my teacher.
He had a strong work ethic and besides our small family farm he worked many years in a factory inhaling chemical fumes which may have added to the onset of PD.
His wife of 59 years, Mary, cared for him at home until the last few months of his life. He passed away April 1990.
We are thankful for the advances through research and education that are being made through this organization.
