Mary Singer, 87, of Ouray, Colorado, passed away the morning of May 9, 2019, at Montrose Memorial Hospital in the company of her loving family. She was born on April 4, 1932, in Miami, Florida to the late William and Florence (Lowe) Nessmith.
Mary graduated from Miami Jackson High School and was a member of the marching band. She attended the University of Miami, studying accounting, business, and government. At this time, she met and married Harvey L. Singer on April 16, 1954. On January 10, 1955, first daughter Karen Leslie was born. Second daughter, Kathy (Kate) Lynn was born August 26, 1956.
Mary worked for the Dade County Assessor's Office and also served as the clerk for the Village of Biscayne Park. She was the vice president and general manager of Century 21-The Grable Co. in North Miami, Florida until 1983 when they moved to Colorado. In the 80s, she served as the clerk for the Ridgway Planning and Zoning Board and the Ridgway Fire District. Mary was a member of Unity Church of Miami and of Grand Junction.
She fell in love with the scenic San Juan mountains when passing through Ouray County the first time in 1973. She and her husband returned every year until moving there in July 1983 to build a home in the old abandoned town of Portland with a view of Whitehouse mountain. Mary also loved to travel, especially with her family. She fondly remembered her trips to 13 European countries with Kate, ski trips with Karen, and trips around the country with her husband in their motorhome. She also enjoyed riding in the jeep, sightseeing with family and friends, and spending time with her favorite dogs, Tilley and Rex.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 65 years, Harvey, and daughter Kate Singer, Ouray Colorado; and her brother Alva Nessmith, Tequesta, Florida. She was preceded in death by her first daughter, Karen Singer, 33, August 3, 1988. Mary has been laid to rest next to her beloved daughter Karen in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
