UMAKANT RASIKLAL KATWALA
LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER, SASRA, UNCLE, GRANDFATHER, FRIEND AND VOLUNTEER
Umakant Rasiklal Katwala was born in Baroda, India, in 1933. As the third child among 6 siblings, he is survived by his wife, youngest brother, two sons, a daughter in law and two grandsons.
At a very young age, after the demise of his father, he took the responsibility of taking care of the joint family and the family business. Uma-bhai was the loving patriarch and inspirational leader of our large joint family and business. A strict disciplinarian at home, socially, he was the life of every party he attended. Everyone awaited his arrival at family events, and enjoyed his incredible sense of humor. Every Sunday, he took us all out for the latest Bollywood hit at the 6PM show!
He was the first in the family to get a college education and was instrumental in ensuring his younger brother and all kids in the next generation of the family paid importance to pursuing higher education and getting college degrees.
Under his leadership and collaboration with his brothers, our family flourished and provided for a loving childhood and prosperous life until we and our cousins were all grown up to take care of ourselves.
He was a devoted husband to our mom, Sohini, and the two of them were inseparable. True soul mates that willingly sacrificed for the happiness of each other, and their family. For the last 15 years of his life they made Fremont home to be closer to their sons and grandsons.
Fremont became home away from home and Uma-bhai became an active contributor to the local community, volunteering at the senior citizen center. He was able to establish a strong social network.
Towards the later stages of his life, he successfully survived a by-pass surgery and bravely lived through Parkinson's. While his vision deteriorated, his fighting spirit was ever strong. We hope and pray that his fighting spirit, sense of humor, undying devotion to our mom, love for his sons, daughter-in-law and grandsons, and loyalty to his family lives forever in us
When we as kids were faced with challenges or unexpected events, he would often say "Whatever happens, happens for the best" With those words, we say Jai Shri Krishna to his departed soul. May he rest in peace.
